Lamps, there are so many that you often lose the overview. Fortunately, there are several categories that give you this overview. Then you are probably wondering what types of chandeliers there are. On our website and in our showroom you will find a lot of chandeliers made of different materials, in all kinds of colors and most importantly in different styles. That is why we have listed the different types for you in this article. Here we tell a little more about the history and background of the chandelier as well as the materials and the type of interior for which the lamp would be suitable.

Antique chandeliers

We call a chandelier antique when it dates back to a period long ago. Actually, antiques predate the period of electricity; around 1900, electricity appeared in the major cities. This was first exhibited at the World’s Fair in Paris in 1889. When we receive an antique chandelier, it is often subject to major restoration. HPV likes to take on such a challenge! The aim is therefore to restore the chandelier in such a way that it can last for another 100 years. When restoring antique chandeliers, only authentic parts are used. In this way the antique touch remains present. We have already been able to do beautiful projects for the buildings of the association Hendrick de Keijzer (Lambert van Meerten in Delft) and the Westerkerk in Amsterdam.

An antique chandelier comes into its own in an old-fashioned, classic interior. The antique chandelier can also be an eye-catcher in a (sleek) modern interior due to the contrast that is created. In our showroom we are in possession of some beautiful antique chandeliers. Feel free to take a look. There may be something for you too!

French Empire chandeliers

The French Empire chandelier is a lamp that dates from the period between 1820 and 1900; the time of Emperor Napoleon (early 1800s). Characteristic of this chandelier is the pear-shaped model, which is also known as the so-called ‘pocket model’. There is also a variant of this model with candles, which could be found in the Palace of Versailles, among other places. The oldest lamp we have comes from Northern France from the year 1600. Due to the many crystals and browns (gold/bronze) color, the French chandelier fits in all kinds of different interiors.

Antique French crowns were often fire gilded in earlier times. This means that the bronze was dipped in a bath of gold powder and mercury (called amalgam). The material was then heated so that the mercury evaporated and only the gold remained on the parts. Hence the beautiful golden color that the chandeliers are known for.

There used to be candlesticks on the arm that illuminated the crown. When the candle was lit, the light rays were reflected on the crystals. This caused a light refraction, which made the lamp look different. In the later versions of the French crowns (around 1900), the light source was moved from outside to inside the lamp.

Bohemian Chandeliers

Are you looking for a lamp with crystals? Then a Bohemian chandelier is completely the one for you. The term “bohemian” comes from “Bohemian”; the region where the lamps come from. This area is located in southern Germany and close to the Czech Republic. Bohemian chandeliers contain a lot of glass and clear crystals. Much color is therefore not perceptible. As a result, a Bohemian chandelier fits in almost any interior. We often work with a company from the Czech Republic. Thanks to their years of experience and large collection, we are always assured of top quality lamps.

Venetian chandelier

When you say Murano, you say Venetian chandelier. These chandeliers are very colorful and available in many models. Venetian chandeliers were originally made in Venice, on the Murano Islands. The glassblowers made beautiful sculptures – from statues to chandeliers. There are now a few companies left that make these glass sculptures and leaves. For Murano, the more lavishly decorated, the better.

Due to the unusual style, a Venetian chandelier is not for everyone. It is a real eye-catcher. In terms of color, virtually any color is possible. Venetian chandeliers fit best in a very classic interior or in a very modern house.

Art deco chandeliers

The art deco chandelier is characterized by sleek shapes and many influences from Cubism. These chandeliers date from the period 1900 to 1930. Art Deco chandeliers are often white in color due to the use of chrome with a matt silver armature. Due to the sleek design, an art deco chandelier fits best in a modern interior.

Old Dutch chandeliers

An Old Dutch chandelier is – as the category itself indicates – originally Dutch and was later taken over by neighboring countries. Around 1600-1700 this type of chandeliers were mainly used in churches. The chandeliers are characterized by either a ring or a sphere at the bottom; this is entirely dependent on the period from which the chandelier originates. The large sphere at the bottom of the crown has two functions. On the one hand, this keeps the crown in balance, because not all parts are the same size or weight. On the other hand, this sphere provides a reflection of the light in the church. A fixture of an Old Dutch chandelier is made of polished bronze, which results in a golden color. To add a new twist to the category, we also offer silver Old Dutch chandeliers.

In terms of lighting elements, Old Dutch have candles. There are no Old Dutch chandeliers where the light comes from under a hood or from a sphere. There is, however, a more modern way of producing electric Old Dutch chandeliers. Then we use electrical sources with LED or halogen.

Old Dutch chandeliers can have 1, 2 or 3 layers. The size of the chandelier depends on the size of the room. For a low space, a crown with 1 level arms is most appropriate. If there is a high space, a large crown with 2 or 3 levels will fit better. The latter is common in churches.

Outdoor lanterns

In addition to indoor lighting, we also sell outdoor lighting! The design of these lamps is comparable to the lamps from the previous categories. We learned from our customers that there was a wish for outdoor lamps that match the chandeliers that we offer. That is why we have adapted our range to this!

Modern chandeliers

The current era can mainly be characterized as modern. There is therefore a great demand for modern chandeliers. This also includes our videlamps. Would you like to know more about the videlamp? Read it here. In addition to vide lamps, we also offer modern lamps with shades. Until now, we have been able to install these types of lamps several times in hotels, lobbies of hotels, but also in private homes. Although the fittings (nickel) of these chandeliers have a classic look, the lampshades on them give them a modern twist. The hoods are made of fabric and also made to measure.

The categories all discussed, we hope that the different styles are now a little clearer. Of course images speak more than 1,000 words and that is why we cordially invite you to come and have a cup of coffee in our showroom. Do you already have a certain style in mind?
